Veterans/Remembrance Day

November 11, 2013 Posted by TrishGreen

poppy 11095567_sIn the US, this day is called Veterans Day, which is appropriate, but limiting. Don’t let it limit you. In Canada, there is a more inclusive name for November 11 – Remembrance Day.

Today is a day for all of us to take the time to thank our armed service members and remember those who have fallen. If you can afford it, maybe you can buy a small bouquet and put a flower on a row of military headstones in one of the armed forces cemeteries or on the graves of the fallen in your hometown. We should not only remember armed forces members, however, we should remember those who have protected us from more localized harm: policemen, firemen, Coast Guard and so many others.

My dad was a WWII veteran and a civilian policeman during the Watts Riots (in Los Angeles), my brother a Vietnam War veteran who served on the battlefield. They both sacrificed years from their lives, and lived to tell the tale. Many were not so lucky. Remember the fallen, hug the others who currently serve and those who have striven for our freedom all over the world. They all deserve our thanks.

Wear your poppy prominently and show that you care. Happy Veterans/Remembrance Day.
