To entertain you today, I’d like to offer a little perspective on what inspires the erotic parts of erotic romance.

Not long ago, an aspiring writer asked me where my inspiration for erotica comes from—personal experience or imagination? It was kind of a personal question, but I did my best to answer it, and it got me thinking.

Inspiration for writing erotic scenes can come from many directions. There’s not one easy way to get the words to flow or the creativity to spark. You have to write from a combination of experience and imagination. Most erotica writers don’t have all the crazy experiences they write in their stories (and sometimes you can really tell), but many of those same made-up fantasies will speak to readers anyway. To put it in another context, think of an Indiana Jones screenplay. Do you think the screenplay writer(s) had experience running through jungles, dodging giant boulders, and vanquishing evil-doers? Seems unlikely. But they came up with those ideas anyway. The same can be said for erotic writing. You can be inspired by the NOT doing, or the doing, but you nearly always have to use your imagination to get things down in pixels.

You can’t write about sex eloquently unless you’ve had it. But once that’s out of the way, you can do all kinds of crazy things with that experience.

  • I definitely agree that sometimes you can tell whenever a scene in a book is just too far fetched. Usually it isn’t a problem for me, though. A little imagination can go a long way! Though, I do like getting the author’s perspective. Creativity is a beautiful thing!

  • I can’t imagine trying to write an erotic scene. I am not much of writer to begin with, but I would probably be tomato red the whole time. Lol.
I do enjoy reading them all though! Thank you for sharing, Patricia.
And also for the wonderful hop.

  • Hi,
People are so funny, no one asks a mystery writer if they’ve had personal experience killing off people. Great response to a very personal questions. Love your books. Rhonda

  • Thanks for your explanation of where the inspiration comes for writers of erotica. I love learning about the behind the scenes of how books are written, movies made, etc. And I love your comment about “…..once you’ve had sex…….., you can do all kinds of crazy with the experience”. 🙂 I might just have to borrowed it.

  • It’s good that you can draw from the imagination because there wouldn’t be a whole lot of books if it all had to be “real”. kbmckee at mail dot com

  • I agree that writing comes from both experience and fantacy! Interesting you can tell if it is made up.

  • I totally agree, Trish, that it has to be a combination of experience and imagination. Someintes it can be dun “research” to try something new to have a basis for writing about it, but not always necessary. I’ve done both–written from experience and from complete imagination. And both are fun to do. 🙂

  • i really like your “progess meter” ! i have never seen that before on a blog!

thanks for the chance to win!

  • Wow Patricia, you did a great job of explaining. Love reading your stories. I love erotica romance. I can read and let my mind take me into the story, and I think that’s what makes a book and it’s author so wonderful, being able to mentally feel and imagine the scenes in a story.

  • Enjoyed reading your post, always interesting to read about an author’s thoughts on their writing.

  • Hi Trish, I agree with your views on your post. I use my imagination, get ideas from reading different authors views on erotic. I even have a blog that I call erotic reviews. I’m waiting for your next book.

  • Thanks Ms. Green for entering this hop. I really enjoy your books and can’t wait to read your upcoming releases.
