The hero of this novella is White Star Smith, a Native American man with a simple goal which gets thoroughly confounded by a woman who ought to be a figment of his imagination, but isn’t.

Audrey Beacon is a winner. Because of her slogan writing ability, she’s won a fabulous vacation – one which only the rich and famous get to experience. It’s a big leap for her; she’s a small town girl, in a dull dead-end job; she’s never had an adventure. Nevertheless, she accepts the prize and is whisked away to a fabulous cruise ship and then the prize: a RAVE – a dream-generated reality adventure. She picks a time-travel RAVE, and goes to 1850s Nebraska.

While in her old West adventure, Audrey meets White Star Smith, an Native American man who has little tolerance for undisciplined females. He’s not hesitant to show his displeasure in order to help Audrey improve her attitude and behavior. Audrey feels totally free to let go for the first time in her controlled, unadventurous life, because of course White Star isn’t real. In short order, Audrey is in love.

Coming back to the real world is tough, and gets harder when Audrey realizes that White Star might actually be a real person. So what was he doing in Audrey’s RAVE? That was not part of the deal!

Can he love her, despite her low social status? Can she show him that she loves him, or is her heart too much to risk?

This ties in with my most recent book, The Winner: Romantek Book One. In that story, Audrey Beacon finds her one true love in the most unlikely way, through a time-travel-like dream that turns into reality. Even her hero, White Star Smith, doesn’t expect the overwhelming desire and emotion he feels for the woman in his virtual reality-scape.

I think putting the two things, sci-fi and romance, together is a natural, though romance often goes along for the ride rather than being the main event. So many of us like a good space opera, but it makes it more approachable to add a little (or a lot of) romance in the mix. Think about the new Star Trek (the alternate reality). In both of those movies, Spock has a romance with Uhura. Talk about an unlikely pairing, and yet it works. It works because someone, in this case the screenwriters Orci and Kurtzman, used their imaginations to figure out how to have a romance without pinning Kirk down to one woman on his own ship. Spock and Uhura, although very important characters, were secondary to Kirk’s story. Kirk’s story couldn’t be hemmed in by an ongoing romance on board the Enterprise. And yet, how does Carol Marcus fit in, in Star Trek Into Darkness? If you remember the original series, you might have a hint. The alternate reality movies needed the romance, but it was a backseat passenger during the wild ride.

The Winner: Romantek Book One is about the romance of the two main characters. The romance takes center stage. The sci-fi and time-travel elements are vehicles for that romance. When you read The Winner, you’ll discover a new world, a world in which dreams might become reality, and travel to different eras, different exciting situations, can be as simple as going to sleep. In this segment, we’re visiting with our couple’s nemesis, Rosemary-the-saloon-girl. Rosemary has already caused trouble for White Star, and seems bent on causing more. Her boss at the saloon is savvy and sees what she’s up to. She gets a spanking and a lecture and a threat as a result. Here’s a bit of the spanking.

Mitch pushed her skirts, necessarily short, up over her behind and sat in contemplation for a moment.

It was too short a moment, as far as Rosemary was concerned.
