A-Simple-Misunderstanding-500x755Arthur and Elly, sittin’ in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! No, not really. I can’t imagine Arthur ever loosening up enough to have fun like that. I’m pretty sure this character hasn’t ever been loose or carefree. He’s a bully, a hater, and a low down skunk. Elly, his wife, bears the brunt of his unexplained anger, and she does it because she believes in a domestic discipline relationship. While, for most people, such a relationship is about a lover, taken-in-hand, looking toward the dominant party in the relationship to lead the way toward mutual happiness, Arthur and Elly’s relationship has morphed into something cruel and, for Elly, deeply unsatisfying, even dangerous.

Elly is a sweet person. Unfortunately, under the harsh eye of Arthur, she’s lost any self-confidence she ever had. She believes she deserves the cruel punishment she receives. That is, until she meets the town veterinarian, Jerry.

Jerry is a loving man with a heart of gold. Although he’s also a spanker, he’s a very mild one, who would never, ever harm a person in his care. Just as with the animals he treats every day with loving kindness, he would treat a wife and mate.

But how can Elly – married to the evil Arthur – and Jerry ever find their happiness? That’s what this book is about.

It’s a book with gritty reality interspersed with romantic and loving tenderness. Elly must learn that she can have love. Jerry must learn it, too.

The setting is Corbin’s Bend, a community in Colorado where spanking is the norm. That might sound far-fetched, but it is so well drawn that it seems quite plausible, even charming. There are many Corbin’s Bend books to choose from and you can start anywhere, but each stands alone and is a full story, not relying on any of the others for a satisfying read.

What I liked about this book were the characters. They were well-drawn and realistic. Although I couldn’t quite figure out what drew sweet Elly to Arthur in the first place (which is not detailed; no info dump in this novel), I could understand how circumstances had led her down the thorny path the couple had taken. Elly is multi-faceted, not an uncomplicated, simpering fool. But it will take a lot of love and understanding for her to feel confident of herself again.

Jerry is exactly the right person to help her find herself. He’s a gentle man with an open heart, willing to share himself with Elly and willing to help her fight against Arthur’s mean treatment. He accepts that if Elly finds the courage to leave Arthur, it doesn’t mean she’ll be turning to Jerry instead, but he hopes. He’s the kind of guy for whom the glass is half full, not empty.

And you’re going to love Elly’s cute little dog. She fits right into the story without making it a “dog story” as so many books with pets can be. This is not a story about animals, even though the hero is a veterinarian and the heroine has a charming dog. It’s a book about people, people with problems to overcome.

The plot moves along well, each scene building upon the one before, and leading to an exciting, romantic, satisfying conclusion. Yes, there is a happy ending.

I highly recommend A Simple Misunderstanding, by Kathryn R. Blake. If you’re a romantic person with a sympathetic heart, you’ll love this book. I know I did.

Chemistry-of-Attraction-Final_200x300My colleague, Thianna D., has a new book out, and it’s part of the Corbin’s Bend series. If you’re not familiar with this series, I’ll simply say that it’s about a community of spanking enthusiasts, and the books are written by a variety of authors, each one adding their own twist as well as revisiting characters from the books that came before. It’s a lovely web of delicious spanking romances that everyone seems to enjoy — me included.

The Corbin’s Bend book I’d like to spotlight today is Chemistry of Attraction, by Thianna D. First, my review.

Book Review, Chemistry of Attraction

Thianna never fails to entertain readers with her romantic and believable domestic discipline stories. Chemistry of Attraction was no different in this regard. It was a fun story that kept me entertained throughout.

The story goes something like this. Dina is a young woman with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, but she doesn’t have a job, owing to her desire to avoid what she perceives as harmful projects. While she submits resumes and fills out job applications for the positions she’s more comfortable with, she’s spending the summer with her grandparents in Corbin’s Bend. As many of you know, Corbin’s Bend is a community where spanking is the norm and influences every part of the residents’ lives.

At first, Dina is wary of this spanking idea, but her grandparents’ relationship nudges her toward acceptance. Then she meets Brandon. Brandon is a new resident in Corbin’s Bend. That means: spanko! When Dina and Brandon meet, there is an instant attraction. Dina doesn’t understand how Brandon – a hunky ex-Marine – could be drawn to her, but she’s compelled to see it through.

Without giving away more of the story, let me just say, their relationship is molten. Brandon is dominant, but kind and fair. Dina is anything but meek, and has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth. But they make a good pair as they discover how they might make a relationship work.

I thoroughly enjoyed Chemistry of Attraction, and know you will too.

Here’s a bunch more information on this fine book. Read what follows and you’re sure to want to snap up a copy for yourself.

Take one hot summer. Add in an intellectual chemist and a dominant retired Marine. Once the chemistry ignites, combustion is soon to follow.

Excerpt:

“Dina?” No response. Figuring that she was in the bathroom as the sliding door to it was closed, he threw back the sheet and blanket and stood up, stretching and wincing as the familiar ache from his legs hit him. Damnit. It would be one of those days. “Dina, want some coffee?” he called out, reaching down to pick up his clothes from where he’d thrown them the evening before. Just the thought of last night sent a zing of pleasure through him and his cock woke up with a jolt. Eyeing the door again, a slow smile crossed his face. Well, if she was in the shower, he could join her. Get her to let out that little wild animal in an enclosed space and see what happened.

As he dropped his clothes in the hamper, his eyes automatically scanned his room and he froze. Once again, he looked around. Not one piece of her clothing was on the floor. “Dina?” he called louder but again there was no response. Pushing the sliding door open to the bathroom, all he saw was an empty room. He quickly walked out into the combined kitchen and living room, but again – empty.

“Fuck,” he growled low in his throat. Dina’s problem was that she thought too much, and when it came to relationships, the girl instantly jumped to the wrong conclusion. “I hope she’s better at jumping to conclusions in science,” he grumbled as he turned to get dressed. If he had to, he would hound her until she talked to him. Even if she chose to walk away then, he would know he had done everything he could. But shit. Even the thought of not spending another passionate night with her was painful. Worse than the damned arthritis.

As he strode through the great room, something caught his eye and he halted turning toward his front door. A small note was taped to it and he walked over and ripped it off. Opening it up, he read the few words and shook his head. The girl had absolutely no clue how appealing she was. It was both attractive and annoying. How could she not know?

tied handsRecently, I featured a book called, Take the Heat: A Criminal Romance Anthology. It’s a multi-author anthology of dark “depraved” stories. Actually, it’s not all that dark, at least to my way of thinking, but some of it is kind of depraved (this judgement is very much subjective and your thoughts might be utterly different). It’s not full of romance or happy ever afters.

However, within the pages is a gem of a story called, “Slipknot.” It’s by my friend Sheri Savill, and even if she wasn’t my friend, I would still find her story engaging, dirty, and utterly fun. The story is about 3000 words long, so I don’t want to give away its secrets, but I will say, it was worth buying the whole book just to get that one gem. And I did buy it; this is not an ARC-based opinion.

What is a slipknot? According to Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, it’s “a knot that slips along the rope or line around which it is made.” And Sheri’s story is slippery, indeed. There are some very sexy situations involving multiple partners, and there’s a twist that you can almost see coming, but it’s still very satisfying when things burst open. It gives you a lovely ah-ha moment.

Cover: Take the HeatI highly recommend this story, and for $2.99, you get the whole book, which is almost certain to have more in it that you’ll like.

✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ for excellence.
