Having no choice but to take shelter in their underground haven, Articulus, the small cohort struggles to learn to live with each other. Charles cannot easily give up his claim on Sonata, and he and Mikhail war with each other while Sonata struggles to choose between them and to find her own independence.
There are still frequent outbursts of sparking emotion from Sonata and Mikhail, as each tries to discover their zone of comfort among the residents. Charles would like nothing better than to have Sonata all to himself, and Laney has a similar interest in the spirited redhead as well as a prurient interest in Mikhail.
